CARO CLEM

In 1980 Anthony Caro the British Sculptor was a frequent visitor to the Syracuse University Sculpture Department in upstate New York. Here he made use of the extensively equipped foundry and it’s technical support. Another regular visitor at this time was the highly influential and dogmatic American art critic and writer Clement Greenberg. Caro had several bronze sculptures fabricated to his rigorous specifications and then he returned to London. A few days later Greenberg came to the University to give a lecture and make some studio visits. He also went to the foundry to look at the recently cast Caro sculptures. Armed with a piece of white chalk and a fortifying bottle of bourbon Greenberg set about physically critiquing the sculptures. Once he had finished adding his chalked and critical corrections the graffiti laden objects with the hand written instructions for alterations were acted upon. The next time Caro saw his Greenberg enhanced sculptures was at the opening of his exhibition at the Andre Emmerich Gallery New York. Giorgio Sadotti
